Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is a perennial plant species belonging to the genus Solanum. Fresh eggplants contain about 7% carbohydrates, 1% proteins, 1.3 mg/100 g of iron, 0.05 mg/100 g of thiamine, 0.05 mg/100 g of riboflavin, 0.5 mg/100 g of niacin, and only 9 mg/100 g of vitamin C – which is considerably lower than in most other Solanaceae crops. For optimal growth and development, most eggplant varieties require temperature of 25-30°Ñ. Therefore, the main producer countries are those with warm or tropical climate, such as China, Indonesia, Japan, Turkey, the Philippines, Egypt, Thailand, and India. In most tropical countries, eggplants are cultivated year-round. In Russia, eggplant yield depends on climatic conditions in the main production regions – Krasnodar Krai, Volgograd, Astrakhan, Rostov, and Saratov oblasts.
Since 2001, Albit has been widely applied for eggplant cultivation in Russia and abroad.
Albit is applied on eggplant as an antidote (safener) to reduce the phytotoxic effect of pesticides. Albit also is a growth stimulator: it enhances field germination, stimulates plant growth and development, improves resistance to adverse environmental conditions, increases resistance of plants to disease damage, increases yield, and improves product quality.
Application method. It is recommended to perform pre-sowing seed treatment (2 mL/kg) for 3 hours and two treatments during the growing season (30 mL/ha, 400 L/hà) for maximal effect. Sprayings are recommended during vegetation at the stage of 2-3 true leaves and 15 days after the first treatment. Albit solution (1 mL/10 L) may be used for watering or drip irrigation. Albit is also recommended for application as antidote in tank mixtures with pesticides according to their standard recommendations. During transplanting, seedlings are recommended to be watered with Albit solution (1-2 mL/L).
In 2001, Albit was applied on eggplant var. Solyaris at the Russian Scientific Research Institute of Selection and Seed-Growing of Vegetable Crops (Moscow oblast). Albit was applied for presowing seed treatment and 2-fold sprayings at the stage of 2-3 first leaves and 15 days after first treatment. As a result, the average yield in the control was 8 t/ha, while treatment with Albit increased yield by 2.6 t/ha (+32.5%). At the same time, yield increase in variant with only presowing seed treatment with Albit was 13.8%. In this case, foliar sprayings have a key role. Additionally, in variant with Albit treatment, eggplants had high commodity, taste and weight (150-250 g).
In Nigeria, eggplants are cultivated in a traditional manner. The following results were obtained on eggplants at the University of Abuja in 2011. After Albit application (presowing seed treatment and 2-fold foliar sprayings), the number of leaves and shoot height increased; the number and weight of fruits rose by 88.6% and 10.7% vs. control, respectively. As a result, yield increased by 5.9 kg/hà (+10.7%).
Apart from yield, Albit improves eggplant resistance to unfavourable conditions, i.e. Albit has high antistress activity. For example in China, eggplant seedlings were underwent to water logging due to heavy rain (district Yinan, province Shandong, 2011). Row-spacings were with water, most plants perished (Fig. 1). After water removing and the following plant treatment with Albit, plants got stronger, restored and gave a good yield of marketable fruits. Farmers sold fruits at a high price – by 0.4–0.5 euros/kg more than untreated ones (Fig. 2).
